Tom Yam Music
It was about a year ago where I listened to my first Thai song. Before I make a trip to the land of Tom Yam, I thought it would be nice to give a little insight of Thai band Potato. Potato was introduced to me through a friend, Ernest, whose band "Blackforest Band" sang mandarin covers of popular songs from Potato like "Nee Lae Kwarme Sei Jai" and "Ruk Tae Doo Lae Mai Dai". Also, Thailand is home to popular bands like Slot Machine and artistes that made it overseas like girl duo China Dolls and Tata Young. Although there are covers of some mandarin pop songs with reference to Thai music, I am unable to name many. The most popular would be Grasshopper 草蜢 mando rendition of Asanee Wasan's"Yin Dee Mai Mee Pun Hah", which was their hit "宝贝对不起". Lastly abit of retro, will post videos of "宝贝对不起" by Grasshopper and "Num Lai" by Silly Fools. Enjoy!
There are many examples of songs resung in different languages, espcially popular songs in the world. One example would be the soundtrack of the hit game "Final Fantasy X" where the famous "Suteki Da Ne", originally in Japanese by singer Rikki, was resung in various languages including English, Vietnamese and Spanish. Close to home, Chew Sin Huey's hit song "从台北到北京" was a chinese cover of "Paris to Berlin" by Infernal. Other songs in the same album include "I Believe", a cover of a Japanese song with the same title by Ayaka.
Also, artistes release tracks in different languages. This is more common in Korean music industry where Korean artistes hit into foreign markets. The most popular example would be the Korean and English versions of "Nobody" by popular girl group Wonder Girls, Korean and Japanese versions of "Sorry Sorry" by Super Junior. Even home grown artiste JJ Lin Jun Jie has released tracks in different languages "Endless Road" in English and "害怕" in Mandarin.
The list of songs is never ending, and it is heart warming to see how songs travel around the world, sung in the different languages, portraying different feels and culture. Finally, I shall end of by introducing the Vietnamese duo Andy Quách and Linda Chou, singing the lovely "Tình Mãi Bên Nhau" which was sung in half Mandarin and half Vietnamese to the popular "美丽的神话" originally by Sun Nan and Han Hong.
